"John Crippen, colored, one of the oldest inhabitants of the island, died this week. He was sent here when a boy to look after stock and had spent all his life here. When he first came to this place there were very few inhabitants and tobacco and flax were the principal crops. He was a typical South African Negro and had many friends."
