Notes for Branson Crippin (B)
Free Negro, freed by deed of manumission by Sarah Crippin/Russell/Wise in 181816

Does not appear in 1800 or 1810 Acc Census

Deed of manumission recorded April 3, 1818 by Sallie Crippen16
Sallie Crippen was dau. of Thomas Crippen, and thus Branson Crippen was originally a slave in the 6th District of Accomack Parish. Reasoning: 1795 Processions Records show the property of the heirs of Thomas Crippen to be in the 6th District of Accomack Parish, which consists of:
“The 6th District in 1795/6 was noted as: 6th Between Kigatank Branch & Onion and up said Branch to wallops road and along said road to Kigatank Branch.”20

1820 Census:
Branson by Crippin free Negro
males: 1: 15-24, 2: 0-14
females: 1: 15-24, 1: 0-14
[there were 2 other “by” Crippin’s that year: Abram and Thomas, both Free Negroes. There were four other Free Negro Crippin’s that year: Isaac, Mark, Peter, and Spencer - but none of these are listed as “by”] There was one white Crippin: Robert. Given that the list is alphabetical, there is no way to tell who his neighbors were and therefore whether or not he was on the Island.

Despite marriage date (1840), 1820 census shows 2 young male children in the Branson Crippin household. One of those two likely was Wilson Crippin.

1830 Census Branson Crippin on what is pretty clearly Chincoteague, head of household of 9. In list in order:
Joshua Whealton, Leah Read, Parker Turlington, Branson Crippin, Benjamin Proust?, John Jester, John Russell, John Hall (no other blacks in list of 25 households on this page, total of 68 families on Island at this time, 9 black)

Acc. Co. Deed Book, 1837-1839, p386
Oct. 17, 1835: For $83 in hand, Branson Crippin bought, from Thompson Holmes & wife Eliza, 21 1/2 acres of land on Chincoteague Island bounded on south by land of Joshua Whealton, on East by lands of James Jester and John Hall, on North by land of Ochar Brinney (a household of 6 FN (free blacks)), and on the West by Chincoteague Bay.

Acc Deed Book 1842-1843, p 544
Aug 9, 1842: In settlement of a $112 debt to Sarah Wise, Branson Crippin transferred deed to 71 (incorrect) acres to Henry Th.K. Russell trustee for Sarah Wise for sale of land to settle debt. Land bordered: NE by Oliver Jester, E by Thomas Birch, SE by Eba Whealton, W by Chincoteague Bay.

Two intervening documents relative to this land
Acc Deed book 1849-51, p163 states as 21 acres and involves Jon I. Blackstone, trustee for John E. Wise 12/18/1849
Acc Deed book 1855-58, p249 involving Jno H. Zoning? 12/25/1855

Acc Deed book 1860-1862
Feb 10, 1859: Henry Russell sold the property at public auction to the highest bidder, John E. Wise (6/5/1816-1/17/1911) .

Ironically? Sarah Wise (1874-8/24/1856) was the wife (married in 1827, 2nd marriage for both) of William E. Wise (died 1836), and the daughter of Thomas and Susannah (Custis) Crippen!!

Dec 31, 1850 Branson Crippin (Blanchen?) was required to post a $100 bond for good behavior toward William Whealton21 [uncertain if this is Branson Sr. or Jr.]

Branson’s net worth in 1850 was $150

Mar. 25, 1850 Branson Crippin (Blanchen?) was indited for keeping firearms.22 [given that this is on the same page as the fololowing, this likely is Branson Sr., since Branson Jr. wasn’t born until 1827, i.e., Jr. should have been born free]

Mar. 25, 1850 Branson Crippin (Blanchen?) was indicted along with others for remaining in the state more than 1 yr. past the date of his emancipation.22 [This has to be Branson Sr., since presumably Branson Jr. (b. 1827) was born free.]

Nov. 29, 1852, indictment for Branson illegally remaining in the state was dismissed.23

Branson, when 90 yo was living in Sidney and Sarah Logan (black) household (1880 Census)
